Solunar theory, first published by John Alden Knight in 1926, holds that fish feeding activity peaks during specific windows tied to the moon's position. When the moon is directly overhead or underfoot — and when it rises and sets — fish behaviour noticeably changes.

FishOrNot.com calculates these windows using Meeus-grade orbital mechanics, the same mathematics used in professional astronomical almanacs, applied to your exact GPS coordinates.

Solunar theory provides a statistically meaningful predictor of fish activity — particularly for freshwater species like bass, walleye, and trout. It does not guarantee fish. Location, bait, technique, and water temperature all matter. What it does is identify windows of elevated feeding behaviour, helping you choose when to be on the water rather than where.

Professional guides, tournament anglers, and fishing lodges worldwide have used solunar tables for decades as one input among several. The pattern holds globally and across species.

Major windows occur when the moon is directly overhead (lunar transit) or directly opposite (lunar underfoot). These are typically 2-hour windows associated with the strongest feeding activity of the day.

Minor windows occur at moonrise and moonset — roughly 1-hour windows with a moderate uptick in activity. On full or new moon days, even the minor windows can produce excellent conditions.

FishOrNot.com uses Meeus-grade orbital mechanics for all moonrise, moonset, and transit calculations — the same standard used in professional astronomical almanacs. This reduces errors to under a few minutes, globally.

Generic or simplified moon formulas used by many apps can produce errors of 30–90 minutes. At that scale, a solunar forecast loses most of its practical value. Accuracy here isn't a marketing claim — it's the entire point.

The activity index is a 0–100 score combining moon phase quality, proximity to a solunar window, current weather conditions, and time-of-day modifiers. It maps to four quality ratings:

• POOR — Low activity. Fish are less likely to be feeding actively.
• FAIR — Moderate activity. Worth going out if you're already planning to.
• GOOD — Elevated activity. A solid day to be on the water.
• EXCELLENT — Peak conditions. Don't miss it.

The score updates every 5 minutes and pulses when you're inside an active solunar window.

Yes. The solunar forecast applies to both freshwater and saltwater species. Toggle between FRESHWATER and SALTWATER using the species pill selector. Tide data is displayed for coastal locations where marine forecast data is available from Open-Meteo.

The 4-week forecast calendar shows fishing quality up to 28 days ahead. You can also view the last 28 days of fishing history, colour-coded by quality, to spot patterns at your local spots over time.

The live fishing activity index, active window status, and weather data auto-refresh every 5 minutes while the page is open. You never need to manually reload to get current conditions.

Weather data — including temperature, wind speed, wind direction, rain probability, UV index, and barometric pressure — comes from Open-Meteo, a free and open-source weather API. No API key is required and no weather data is stored on our servers. All data is fetched directly in your browser for your coordinates.

No personal data is collected or stored. Location coordinates are used in-browser only to fetch your forecast and nearby waterbodies. Favourite locations are saved to your device's local storage only — not sent to any server. The only data we count is anonymous global visitor totals.
