About FishOrNot.com

Basic Fishing Information
Should Be Free.

No subscriptions. No sign-ups. No spam. No pop-ups. No asterisks. Just the forecast — for every angler, everywhere.

Somewhere along the way, someone decided that knowing when to fish should cost money.

Tide tables. Moon phases. Solunar windows. Barometric pressure. Data that fishermen have shared freely for generations — locked behind $40-a-year subscriptions, email capture walls, and upsell notifications that fire when you're trying to find a good morning to take your kid fishing.

We think that's wrong.

FishOrNot.com is a free, no sign-in, global solunar fishing forecast tool — built because basic fishing information should be free. Not free-with-asterisks. Not free-until-you-want-the-good-stuff. Free.

Our Mission

Built for Anglers.
Not for Investors.

Fishing is one of the world's great hobbies. Whether you're heading out alone before sunrise, spending a day on the water with friends, or creating memories with family — fishing should be simple, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.

We started FishOrNot.com because too many fishing apps treat anglers like a monetisation problem to solve. Essential information buried behind upgrade prompts. Email capture walls before you can see a tide chart. Push notifications designed to sell, not inform. Subscriptions for data that should never have had a price tag on it.

We wanted to build something different. A no-nonsense fishing planner that respects your time, doesn't ask for your credit card, and just gives you the information you need to decide when and where to fish.

The hero of every fishing trip is the angler. We're just the tool that helps them win.

Always Growing

And We're Just Getting Started

FishOrNot.com already covers 4.5 million fishing spots worldwide — every creek, every pond, every lake, bay, and river we can map. Nearby spots load in seconds, filtered by waterbody type, no search required.

We're building a growing library of fish species data for popular sport fish on every continent — seasonal behaviour, bait recommendations, lure suggestions, and practical tips written for anglers, not biologists.

Saltwater anglers get tide data. Pressure anglers get barometric history. Ice fishing anglers, fly fishing anglers, kayak anglers — this is for all of you, not just the bass boat crowd.

Everything we add stays free. That's not a promotion. That's the point.

The Science Behind It

Why Solunar Theory Works

Solunar theory was first published by John Alden Knight in 1926. Knight observed that fish — like most wildlife — are most active during specific windows tied to the moon's position. These windows are known as major solunar periods (moon directly overhead or underfoot) and minor solunar periods (moonrise and moonset).

Decades of field observation have confirmed the pattern. Fish feeding activity peaks during these windows, often regardless of time of day. A major window at 3 AM still triggers activity — fish don't check clocks.

FishOrNot.com calculates solunar windows using Meeus-grade orbital mechanics — the same standard used in astronomical almanacs — for your exact coordinates. Generic formulas can be off by 30–90 minutes. Ours are accurate to within a few minutes, globally.

How It Works

From Coordinates to Forecast

01

Your Location Is Detected

GPS, IP address, or manual search — your coordinates are found within seconds. No location data is stored permanently.

02

Moon Position Is Calculated

The app computes precise overhead and underfoot times for your latitude and longitude using Meeus orbital mechanics — the same standard used in astronomical almanacs.

03

Solunar Windows Are Generated

Two major windows (moon overhead / underfoot) and two minor windows (moonrise / moonset) are calculated. Each gets a start time, end time, and moon event label.

04

Activity Score Is Weighted

Moon phase quality, proximity to a solunar window, weather conditions, and time-of-day modifiers combine into a 0–100 fishing activity index.

05

Forecast Refreshes Every 5 Minutes

Live activity index, active window status, and weather data auto-refresh so your screen always shows current conditions.
